This Month at CDIA, September 2011: Photography and Graphic Design

CDIA students learn early on that the successful collaboration between creative professionals can be expressed as an equation: 1+1=3. As unlikely as this may sound, it perfectly describes what happens when talented artists work as part of a team to create a final product that exceeds the sum of its parts.

This month we feature some great examples of this process– poster triptychs produced by Graphic Design students directed by program faculty Joe Comeau and Shauna Macnamara in collaboration with Photography Program Associate Director Randall Armor’s Product and Still Life Lighting 2 students.

Preparing for a joint post-project critique earlier this week with students from both programs, Graphic and Web Design Program Director Peter Kery explained that “graphic design is a visual language used to resolve communication problems. Designers develop images, words, and in some cases, an integration of both to represent the ideas their clients want to communicate. Images and typography can be incredibly powerful and stimulating avenues of communication. Design solutions can not only achieve their informational goals, but transcend those aims and boundaries and convey moods and emotions that create a more lasting impression to its targeted audience.”

Armor added “as much as we may want to believe otherwise, commercial photographers don’t work in a vacuum- it’s not all about us. Projects like this stress the importance of learning how to play on a team nicely with others, and how to work together to creatively solve creative problems. It’s the same for everyone at CDIA-photographers, designers, audio engineers, animators and filmmakers all face an identical challenge- how best to apply talent and technology in each specific medium to effectively convey information. The more each of us knows about how the other solves those problems and then helps them do it, the more useful (and the more marketable) we are.”

We think the results speak for themselves. Great work, everybody!
