Introduction to Visual
Effects and Compositing in Adobe After Effects

MARCH 16-25: INTRO TO VISUAL EFFECTS & COMPOSITING IN ADOBE AFTER EFFECTS

Compositing and the use of visual effects (VFX) has been a part of motion picture history since its infancy, and although optical printers have long-since been replaced by computer applications, the fundamental concepts in creating VFX remain largely unchanged. For the past 17 years, Adobe After Effects (AE) has been a leading application in creating effect shots and on-screen digital magic for both small and big screen productions, and today, skilled AE artists are still in high demand. This course will introduce the student to the basics of creating visual effects, including preparing to shoot footage from pre-production and on-set, as well as the basics of compositing and using computer generated imagery (CGI) in AE. Students will be demystified to the secrets of visual effects and the sometimes intimidating nature of AE. If you can imagine it, AE can help you make it motion picture reality, and this course will introduce the versatile set of tools that AE has available as well as the practical knowledge to avoid mistakes and create effective workflows.

- Intermediate knowledge of digital video production and formats (Final Cut Pro knowlegde preferred)

Demo Reel Workshop

Waltham MA Campus

Join us for a Demo Reel Workshop with Greg Croteau.

DEMO REEL WORKSHOP: CANCELED.

Your demo reel is one of your most important assets as you strike out in your career as a digital filmmaker. Whether you're bidding on a commercial, a marketing video or a wedding, potential clients always ask the same question: "Can I see some of your work?"

Creating a demo reel can be confusing. What should go in my demo reel? How long should it be? Should I show the bride and groom shots from my zombie film? This two-day workshop is designed to answer those questions and more. We'll discuss what type of jobs are out there and what those clients want to see. Then we'll look at examples of successful (and not so successful) demo reels, identify what should go in yours and dedicate lab time to putting it together. Several class critiques will allow you to refine and polish your reel.

By the end of the weekend, you'll be able to answer that client with a confident, "Absolutely."

Additionally, students must come with a Final Cut Pro project containing a selection of their best work. This can include raw footage, completed films and works-in-progrss. A mix of documentary, corporate and narrative (commercial, film, music video) footage is encouraged.

CANCELED. Dates to be rescheduled.

Space is limited - register now at workshops@cdiabu.com

Red One Workshop: Join the Red-Volution at CDIA!
Red One Workshop: Join the Red-Volution at CDIA!

Date:
June 18-June 20

Price:

$800 CDIA/BU students and alum
$995 public

With the advent of the Red Camera, digital cinema has been revolutionized. An ultra-high definition motion picture camera is now available at a price that independent producers can afford. This three-day hands-on workshop is designed to make sense of the camera, it's operation and post-workflow. The Red-volution's come to CDIA.

During the course of this three-day workshop, the Red will be first systematically broken down. Configuring both the camera's accessories and it's internal settings will be covered in-depth, addressing a variety of shooting situations.

As many options as there are for shooting, so too are there options for a post-production workflow. A search of the internet will offer various opinions. In this workshop, we will look at two workflows, field-tested and guaranteed to get you up and editing.

Of course, none of this means anything unless you're going to shoot. And shoot we will. From controlled exercises to familiarize yourself with the camera to a scripted, short-film shoot, there will be plenty of hands-on time.

At the end of the workshop, all of the Raw .r3D files shot during the workshop will be provided for you to take home and add to your reel or to take through post-production.
