Much has been said about the excitement of PAX East. And for sure, there was lots of excitement. But what about the followup? That’s one of the most important activities when it comes to networking. It’s great to attend an exciting event, however, the next step is what gets results when it comes to building a network. After hanging out with thousands of people in your industry and having some great conversations… what’s next?

CDIA was present at PAX East and our booth was staffed with a diverse group of students, alumni, instructors, career services and admissions-types. Great hodgepodge of people that were loving the event and are passionate about gaming, and in particular, 3D animation.

One recent grad, Sean Gallimore, is now a part-time instructor and is also looking for a full-time gig in animation. Sean wowed visitors to CDIA’s booth with his skillful use of ZBrush techniques. When taking a break, Sean worked the floor looking for connections that might turn into potential employers.

Said Sean, “PAX was a great experience. Not only a chance to hang out and bond with CDIA students and faculty, a chance to help the school bring in potential new students and talk software and technique to others. It also allowed me the opportunity to get out and explore the world of videogame art and meet people in the industry at various booths.”

He added, “A few potential employers came to the CDIA booth as well. One, an East Coast-based visual effects company looking to expand their cgi team by one. I followed up with them and I have an interview tomorrow.”

Talk about a great outcome – fingers-crossed for Sean!

It was pretty exciting to embrace the experience that is PAX. Meeting CDIA grads employed in fields they love can’t be beat. And making connections with potential employers.

Look for us next year. We’ll be the ones with the big smiles talking about how to follow your passion with a certificate in the digital imaging arts from BU’s CDIA.

You may have noticed he’s not answering the phones and eating six small carb free meals at the front desk anymore… His muscles are no longer busting through his shirt as he chats up the ladies who come in for interviews and tours… Diego has given up his administrative duties and his crock pot meals here at CDIA for a full time gig at Lineplot Studios and although it is bittersweet, we couldn’t be more proud of our 3D animation CDIA graduate!

Diego’s current project is a feature length animation called Silver Circle: http://www.silvercirclemovie.com/. As described by Diego, “This is a political film based in 2019 illustrating super inflation when the dollar doesn’t mean anything. A rebellious group fights back against the government.”

Pasha Roberts, the president of Lineplot Studios, was originally invited to CDIA by Anthony Marquette (program director) and Bruce Jaranian (career services). After taking a look at our curriculum, his feedback was essentially: “Bring them to me!”, referring to our talented alumni. He soon hired quite a few graduates, adding more over the months as production ramped up and the project neared completion. In addition to Diego, Jaime Goulet, Jenna Montani, Matt Cassidy, Matt Frazier, Matt McCarthy and Peter Yurchenko all worked on the project. Rumors of a sequel are already starting to circulate.

When catching up with Diego, I couldn’t help but to inquire about his diet as well. For all who are curious, it turns out he has traded in the vigorous P-90X routine and bacon for the “Paleo diet” which essentially cuts out all processed foods. With the high demands of releasing a feature film, he doesn’t have as much time to work out, but on the “Paleo diet” he remains trim and healthy! Diego misses his time spent at the front desk and particularly social aspect. (the ladies!!)

All are invited to the screening at Kendall Square Cinema on Thursday, March 28th, 7:30PM. And any single, healthy, independent ladies who love 3D animation should ask for Diego at the after party! Remind him to tell you about the time he actually blew up his crock pot at the front desk.

Randy will join Peachpit Executive Editor Ted Waite, photographer, instructor and author Joe Lavine, and two other educators in a panel discussion entitled Trends and Tools in Photographic Education, Where Photographic Education is Now…and Where It’s Heading. Their discussion and brainstorming session will focus on the trends we’re seeing at schools like CDIA and the tools Peachpit can create to help better educate our students. Keynote speakers at this year’s sold out conference include Martin Parr, Richard Misrach and Boston’s own Olivia Parker.

The Society for Photographic Education is a nonprofit membership organization that provides and fosters an understanding of photography as a means of diverse creative expression, cultural insight, and experimental practice. Through its interdisciplinary programs, services, and publications, the society seeks to promote a broader understanding of the medium in all its forms through teaching and learning, scholarship, and criticism.

Peachpit, a division of Pearson, is a leading publisher of photography textbooks under the Peachpit Press and New Riders imprints.
