Ron Friedman: A Note from the Events Planning Team

January 19, 2010 A Note from the Events Planning Team

We were lucky enough to have Ron Friedman, of Tencent Boston, speak at our Waltham Campus on January 7, 2010 - as a part of our Big Shots in 3D Animation Series. To list off a few of Ron’s credits, he was the Animation Supervisor on "Pan's Labrynth", which was nominated for several awards and won three Oscars. He has worked as a character animator on films like "Van Helsing", "Snakes on a Plane", "The Mist", and “Evan Almighty" amongst many others. He has also worked as an animation developer on several major video games, and is in works of developing a much-anticipated, fantasy-based MMO to be released in 2011.

Ron's background and unique story about how he came to the world of 3D Animation was insightful, entertaining, and captivating. He kept an audience of more than 75 people wrapt in attention. His inviting style and exuberant persona (often demonstrating movements of his animated alter-egos) coupled with excellent advice on animation technique and how to put together a demo reel - was nothing short of extraordinary. He spoke with intense passion for what he does, and encouraged students to do what they love. His real world advice about breaking into the industry was realistic and refreshing - his motivation to succeed in this industry was an inspiration to the crowd.

Not only that, but after two hours of speaking (and running, and jumping) Ron gladly met with each and every student and staff member that approached him with a smile.

Boston University Center for Digital Imaging Arts is a part of the 3D Revolution - and Ron is a perfect example of the hands-on philosophy we embody as an institution, propelling himself into what he is as an animator with the gusto to succeed at all costs. With that being said, the events team is thrilled to have established a connection with Ron, and have already begun talks of working again with him in the future.

It looks like the Big Shots Series of 2010 is destined for great things!  If this event was any indication, we are thrilled to see what is to come in these next few months!
