Our CDIA workshops have been designed for amateur and professional photographers, filmmakers and artists to improve their skills in a "learn by doing" educational studio environment. The wide range of subjects are taught by experienced professionals who use and know the latest technologies.

Module Descriptions

INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL EDITING WITH AVID

This workshop is an in-depth introduction to the techniques of nonlinear editing on the Avid Xpress DV Pro system. You'll progress through the basic phases of creating a sequence on Avid Xpress DV Pro, including inputting source footage, assembling and trimming sequences, editing audio, creating titles, and outputting a finished program. Class time is divided between demonstration and practical hands-on exercises. You'll also be provided with two full-day hands-on lab sessions. (Avid certified workshop 119)

INTRODUCTION TO AVID XPRESS PRO EFFECTS

This workshop introduces basic effects using demonstrations and hands-on-practice. Topics include creating multilayered effects, key framing effects, creating effect templates, and nesting layers. CDIA enhances the standard two-day workshop with a full day of instructor-assisted lab time. This is a follow-up workshop to Introduction to Digital Editing with Avid. Basic familiarity with Mac recommended but not required. (Avid certified workshop 129)

FINAL CUT PRO 5

This three-day hands-on workshop with a two-day lab takes students into the editing environment using Final Cut Pro 5. Topics include basic setup, adjusting and customizing preferences and settings, capturing video and audio, various editing and trimming techniques, ripple, roll, slip and slide tools, audio editing and audio creation, finishing and final output. This workshop is designed for those who want to learn to edit professional quality video using Final Cut Pro 5. (Apple certified workshop 101)

DIGITAL STORYTELLING

This workshop focuses on the concept of personal storytelling, and applying the tools of digital media technology to bring your personal story to life in a 3-5 minute multi-media piece. The class begins with a discussion of the concepts of good storytelling, including how to find a personal voice, and how to craft a short script suitable for applying additional media. You'll learn how to do basic image and audio editing in order to bring together visual and audio elements. You'll refine the elements of narration, images, music, video, and audio into a cohesive story.

INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL FILMMAKING

A one-day workshop designed for beginning filmmakers with little or no prior experience who want to learn the tools and techniques of digital filmmaking. You'll learn how to set up and compose basic shots, record dialogue, transform a scripted scene into a shot list, assemble the scene using a simple editing system, and save the final results on a DVD. With coverage of both documentary and narrative forms, the workshop provides an introduction for those interested in creating personal films using a small, portable DV camera.

FINAL CUT PRO COLOR CORRECTION

This one-day workshop focuses on a professional approach to color correction. Working with several real-world projects, you will learn how to properly read the video scopes, adjust contrast, fix color balance problems, and achieved special effects using Final Cut Pro's powerful 3-way color corrector. Prerequisites: Completion of Final Cut Pro 5 or equivalent.

DIGITAL FILM BOOTCAMP

A four-day intensive workshop that introduces you to the fundamentals of digital filmmaking. A mix of presentations and hands-on production conveys filmmaking craft from both a practical and aesthetic perspective. The workshop covers key aspects of using the digital camera, including how to adapt the camera shooting style for various locations and situations. Lighting will be explored including using natural and artificial lighting as well as techniques and tools for quality audio recording in the field. You'll develop skills by working on a production project that includes planning, shooting with actors, editing a rough cut, and creating a DVD of the final results. Though the emphasis is on narrative form, the skills you'll learn in this workshop will provide a solid basis for continued exploration of either documentary or narrative work using a small, portable DV camera. Prior completion of Introduction to Digital Filmmaking is helpful but not required for participation in this workshop.
